Zire voice recorder sounds good?

Hi folks,

I noticed in reviews that the Zire 72 has voice recording ability. How does that audio recording compare to, say, an mp3 player with the same kind of ability?

I'm interested in using it for making recordings of my kids talking and am wondering that if it matches the mp3 players that can record voice then I'd much rather not buy an additional device when the PDA can do both.

The voice recorder will only record when there is a sound. So if there are quiet spots on the recording, then those will be skipped. It makes for really hard listening to anything other than simple notes.

It's a pitty too as I would really like to be able to record like a real recorder.

I'm going to take another look at mp3 players to see how their recording capabilities stack up. Voice recording on the Zire sounds good for personal note-taking use, but other than that, I should probably get something more suited to recording specifically.
