Rumor: Zire 73

i dont buy it, cause if u look at it carefully, the gret antenna thing at the top seems to be drawn on, cause theres different shades of grey on it, and on the zire, the edges arent even rounded. this is definatly photo shoped

LOL. :D I know it's a fake (it's green, my gosh!). It's just to jumpstart some new discussions about what the new Zires could be. Take a look at the thread it points to, there are some nice new Photoshop-ed works there. ;)

lets speculate then. the new zire 73 will have 64mb ram. an improved 1.2MP camera (the reason i dont think tehres a 2MP camera is because look at the treo, the camera stayed the same and also, a 2MP camera is expensive so if palmone implements that, that may raise the price of the zire), looks blue again, no wifi(or that would beat the T5), bt 1.2, palm os 5.4.5. 18 bit screen, no virtual graffiti(well because that would make it look better than the T5). i guess its just freshening.

or..maybe palmone thinks the zire72 is good enough so they decide not to make a new one and let it hang in the market for another year like the E2.

I think the new Zires will lose their cameras but will have landscape. No Bluetooth, no WiFi. Silver body color.

You're kidding right Joel? No bluetooth? I can understand no camera, but it at least has to have bluetooth and it best be bluetooth 2.0.

I almost bought one of those silver Zire72's today, but I thought about the Zire73 and it's possible 320x480 screen size (which would be great in the Zire72 form).

Not kidding at all. I'm seeing palmOne offering "old school" PDAs again and the Zires will be those units. Bluetooth and WiFi would be reserved for the Tungstens and Treos.

What I said are just speculations so don't base your decisions on those.

The silver Zire 72 looks good. If new Zires come out, you can easily sell the Zire 72 to update/grade. :)

True, but when does Palm usually release new models? May? Also, the Zire72 isn't as hot as the TH55, so I would probably have a hard time selling it.

i dont think zires will get 320*480 screens. that would definitely hurt their t5 sales. i say an improved 1.2MP cam with bt.

of coures wait. we all wanna know what palm has up their sleeves, i think it is a bad idea to get it now because we all know palmone is going to release something in april or may. i cant believe ur moving from a th55. the th55 is way ebtter than the zire 72. i got it the first day of the release and i exchagned it 5 times and finalyl returned it and got the th55. i was disappointed wti hteh zire72's camera, i dont use bt, wasnt used to a small screen (i caem from a nx70), the feeling, whinign screen noise, when u plug in the earphone, there's this hissing sound, and the color of the zire. but what i liked about the zire72 was D pad, the screen showed really nice colors, very fast, and it was able to play .wmv files. i returned it in the end and got the th55 and i totally loved it.

i have a feeling that palmone may not update their zire 72 because its pretty good for "palm standards" and they dont want to hurt their T5 sales but introudicng a better zire72.

Well, I don't care about the camera, wifi access points aren't as common as they should be, I can get internet access anywhere (through bluetooth connection with my phone - EDGE high speed network), the silver Zire72 looks alot better than the blue one, I can live with a 320x320 screen (especially one that looks as good as the Zire72's), the screen whine sound should be fixed with newer production models, never heard of a hissing problem with the headphones before, I agree the D pad and button arrangement of the Zire72 is great. The TH55's button arrangement is horrendous.

Oh I do think it's about the right time for them to replace the Zire72. When was the Zire72 released? I think it'll be a year this April. They release new versions for each line (Tungsten, Zire, etc.) once or twice a year don't they?

well i had hissing problems when i got it.

if u think about it, the zire 72 doesnt really need an upgrade. its like the tungsten e, it lived for 2 years already. the zire 72 already has a 1.2MP cam (still pretty good for today's standard). beautiful screen. upgrading to garnet 5.4.5 doenst make much of a difference. its light(very very light). it has 32mb ram which is pretty good for palm standards.

The only upgrade it needs is to bluetooth 2.0, possibly more user accessible RAM (TH55 had at least 31 of its 32 available), a 320x480 screen without any whine and longer battery life.

Nothing much but I read at PalmAddict that Buy.com has a leather case (http://www.buy.com/retail/Product.asp?sku=10370018&SearchEngine=Inktomi&Type=PI&Keyword=10370018&Category=Comp&dcaid=17282) for the Zire 72 and 73. It might be a typo but it can also mean the new Zires will have the same dimensions.

The Z73 popped up at Buy.com, its coming. Think better camera and a ton of internal RAM (NAND here too) with the Athena connector and some software tweaks. Maybe some A/V accessories here to really push this as a mobile media companion that looks attractive. Best guess is $350.

That is all a guess for now. Chances are that there is a ton of RAM. Form factor was popular so there may be little reason to play with it (maybe better paint ;) and new shapes to the buttons -same placement though).

I just found a website with a somewhat convincing picture of the possible zire 73. My beef with this is I'm not sure if PalmOne would stick with the blue rubber paint with all the complaints about it peeling off. Check this link out.

I think there will be a Zire 73 probably by fall if not sooner, but the pictures are definitely photoshoped to give an idea of the product with the PDA.

A lot of product shots are fake CG or photoshop these days.
