Panic time here - my 6 week old Zire 72 won't turn on - nothing at all. Plugged it in - the green light top left hand turned on but still nothing. I have tried reset, but nothing. I'm hyperventilating - any ideas at all what this might be. It worked fine about 3 hrs ago.

hmmmm, this case sounds similar to the case i had with my T5. (Wont turn on, no response to any sort of reset....yady yada) OK lets try what i did with my T5 shall we?
1-leave your zire UNCHARGED for 48 hours or more (2 days).
2-After 48 hours are up, charge it again.
3-wait at least 15 minutes before attempting to turn it on again
4-its now on, turn off bluetooth when u do not need it. And turn beam receive off when u dont need it.

Hope this works, cause i gave this advice out to 3 people with the similar problem, and this advice helped all 3 of them. So lets hope your my 4th person. So i can continue my streek.

Man, I sure hope I'm the 4th person too!! So, was it a one time problem or is it recurring? If I've never used BT, is it safe to assume it's turned off, or will that have to be done manually? I have no use for that, so I've never even examined that.OK , time to dig out the old SJ33

Thanks for the response

on my T5? well dont mean to scare you, but my T5 broke down 3 TIMES!.........But the 4th time was the final time i will stand for it. So i written everything that i did with my T5, for 6 days. But it appears that it never broke down after the 4th day.

But to turn off bluetooth, all u have to do is go to the bluetooth icon on the app menu and turn it off.

Lets hope your Zire is still with us and hasnt fallen to the dark side yet.

Hi There,
I had this problem with my Zire 72 about 3 days after it was replaced by a refurbished unit through warranty. As I remember the cirumstances, it was charging before it cut out on me (wouldn't turn on) I also had the green led light up when AC Adapter was plugged in. Nothing i did would allow it to turn on, pushing the reset button, the power button, any button on the front or even attempting to do a hard reset.
The palm is working now and you wouldn't believe how it was "resurrected"!!!!!! My friend saw the palm on my table, picked it up and started pushing random buttons on the front quite vigorously. All of a sudden, the screen sprang to life!!!!!! All data was erased however. Now my palm hasn't cut off since, but after this strange occurence battery life seems to have been reduced to about 2 hours (and is quite erratic) it jumps from 100% to 80% in about 2 mins and then to 90%. Batterygraph's graph looks quite funny, with almost vertical lines (see picture)!!!!! Looks like it's back to palm, but not right now as I can't do without it.

the reason why your data got erased is because your battery has drained to nothing. And when u charged it again, your friend could've pressed any button, and the zire would come to life.

Hi, KProz here. Unable to log on at work due to Proxy server.
No, it wasn't because my palm was discharged. My palm first wouldn't turn on STRAIGHT after charging. It would not turn on for at least 24 hours after discharging and recharging as well. When charged for about 6 hours, palm would not turn on. However, when my friend started pressing buttons, it did turn on. So it was not just a matter of the battery level.

And the lucky winner is ...Qba! Thanks Danopoly, that did the trick. Luckily I'm backup nuerotic, so I'm ready to go again. Didn't have the patience to wait 48 hrs, but 24 worked. Out of curousity, as it was a battery discharge problem, why could I get no screen when it was first plugged in?

that i do not know, my guess is that the battery needs to store enough power before it can run the PDA. But its not a battery discharge problem. Palm1 devices tend to do this sometimes. I guess 12 hours would do the trick, seeing how the battery of the zire72 is smaller than the T5, i had to charge mine for 48 hours. And its so hard to wait! but i had to do it........4 times!

But anyways, your lucky number 7! not 4. tsk tsk. I just realized. I forgot to add 2 people. But glad your Zire is up and running again.

Do you still have a warranty for the Zire? If you dont, you can buy one off of Ebay. Circuit City, etc.

well, i have unpluged the AC adapter for more than 12 hours already, but the charging light is still on:( should i wait till the light is off(god knows for how long), charge it again and try to turn it on? or should i just run back to the dealer and get a new one?

thank you.

I left mine unplugged for about 24 hrs and Danopoly's idea worked fine after that time.

Unfortunately when I went to turn it on this AM, it was the same old problem...sigh. Just not quite as scary this time 'round. So we are counting the hours again. I think it's time to contact Palm about this; I have to much info on there to put up with this. I was thinking of updating my SJ the other day, to bad I'm such a procrastinator.

I think I'll amuse myself today by seeing if I can update my SJ, either thru the palm desktop, or thru MS export. I still have that on my computer, should work.

LFG - I can't remember if the green light was still on or not after that time, sorry can't help you out.

Hi, I received my new zire 72 by auction last week and tested for some minutes it was fine (but I didn't charge it).
when I tried to turn it on last night after back from a trip, it's simply no response at all. I charged it overnight ( but the green power led still off all the time), nothing change. I can not return it to the seller as it has passed the return period. Anyone can help? thanks a million!!

Hello,

Paul from palmOne here. It would be difficult to say what the extact cause for the issue is, but I can refer you to the palmOne Knowledge Library article "Handheld does not turn on when you press the power button, or not respond when you tap it" (http://www.palmone.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=25559), which may be of assistance.

after charging over 24 hrs, my zire 72 pops up and seems working properly, except the left top green led never lights up. I'm wondering if all this has somthing to do with the bettery voltage. how can I check the bettery status?

hi im back. Ive forgot to tell you that the problem will occur again a day or so after you fixed it. So when following my steps (on first page) and completing it and you have successfuly turned it on. TURN OFF "BEAM RECEIVE" i repeat, TURN OFF BEAM RECEIVE! cause ive heard that on some palmone devices, the IR tends to break down. So incase you havent noticed, your PDA will die at a certain time. My T5 dies at 11:25 or so 3 TIMES! So after the 4th time, ive turned beam receive off and it never died since. So to repeat myself again. TO PREVENT YOUR ZIRE72 FROM DYING, FOLLOW MY STEPS AND TURN OFF BEAM RECEIVE AFTER YOU'VE GOT IT TURNED ON.

I know this a very stupid question, but just curious, because I haven't heard any mention it. Have anyone tried a hard reset when thier palm stop turing on? That's the first thing I thought when some one said their friend was just pushing a bunch of random buttons. (He's like the fonz!)
Anyways, when I recieved my palm off ebay, I realized the dimmer didn't dim, it was stuck on full brightness, but I really didn't care so I let it slide. After about six months the blue paint on my palm started to peel like crazy, and it look so gehto. I got pissed and I called them up and told them my palm dimmer doesnt work and its all peeling. Turns out the palm was still under warrenty! They gave me a brand new one....or at least looked brand new. Now I keep it in the palmone Zire 72 leather case 24/7 (got it off ebay for $14) The piont is, it works perfectly fine now...(except the backlight seems to make a rather loud buzzing noise, you can only notice a difference in niose when the room is silent) The morale of the story is: Warrentie's can save lives!!! IT SAVED MINE!

Hi! My name is Sarah and I just did a search on the web for "palm zire72 won't turn on" and found this forum/thread.

Danopoly, your advice was perfect. I was quite spooked by the non-response from my Palm, but I followed your suggestions and it is back up and running with no problem.

Fantastic. Thanks for posting this.

yay!

Guys, the In-Cradle reset is as powerful too. It woke up my TE2.:)
Rechargeable devices only
An in-cradle reset will reset the charging circuitry in a rechargeable device. This is helpful if your device turns off as soon as you turn it on, or if it doesn't seem to be charging when you connect it to a power source.

The charger can be any type of cradle or cable that charges your device. The important bit is to make sure the power adapter is plugged in and supplying power to your device during the reset.

Connect your device securely to its charging cradle or cable, and connect the cradle/cable to a power source.
Use an unfolded paper clip, or the reset tool at the tip of your stylus.
Gently press the RESET button inside the hole on the back panel of your device
All data on your device should be retained. If you do lose data after a soft reset, you may have a more serious issue with your hardware that requires a repair.
After a soft reset, a logo screen appears, followed shortly by a Preferences screen asking you to set time and date. :):):)

hi, i wondered if anyone had a copy of the palm zire 72 installation disk which they could email to me as my disk has a massive crack in it. If the disk is to big then i would be happy to just have documents to go. My email is bobdabildur@hotmail.com.

hey,
I am currently experiencing similiar problems with my T|E.

Let me tell you the background story first tho... I am in a foreign country where the outlets supply 220v instead of 110v (American). I got an adapter which has variable voltage selection (from 1.5 to about 9 or so). I set it on 3 and plugged in my Tungsten E, worked completely fine. Somehow... the charger got "adjusted" to about 6 or 7.5v instead of 3v. I plugged the palm in, unaware of the charger being overvoltaged, and I started to play a game that I had loaded on the SD Card. It was a Sonic game which normally lagged on my handheld but for some reason it was running smoothly this time, I was quite pleased. Any way, after I played this game I turned my palm off, left it on the charger and put it away. After about 20 mins I came back to it and turned it on... and... Viola! no reply... power button, reset... nothing... confused... I left it on the charger and went away... after a while I came back and checked it... still no power... BUT... it was EXTREMELY hot. It was Hotter than I had ever seen it before. I dont remember exactly what happened after that... but... something like leaving it on the charger... and pressing the power button numerous times ensued... I dont quite recall... the TE was extremely hot and would not respond to ANY button press. I checked the adapter and burst into tears realizing I probably melted some wire connected to the battery considering I over charged it by double the voltage and the fact that the Palm was so hot for so long. Anyway... I will try the suggested procedure of leaving it undercharged and then charging it and whatnot... but I am horribly embarrassed to admit... I dont think thats the problem. I occasionally put the palm back on the charger and left it (this time making sure it was set on 3v). I am extremely sad and I am sure I have run out of the warranty period cuz I've had this baby for a year. ANy suggestions would be extremely appreciated...

Thanks...

P.S. Sorry for the IMMENSE post...

...setup the security and locks.

My Zire 72 has worked flawlessly since I got it July 2005. Holds a charge for 2-3 days, turns on as needed, buttons all operating fine... then I decided, humm, if I ever lose this, I don't want my data for anyone to see, so I turned on security, and assigned a password. BOOM! All of a sudden I experienced the non-waking situation similar to what others have described. So, I did get it to reset (without using the "danoby manuever") and I removed the password assignments. Problem gone.

Now to make this scientific I really need to repeat the test, but let me get all my data backed up before I travel that nerve-wrecking road again!

There are forum notes out there that if you use the built-in security feature to turn off your palm at a certain time, and then you turn it off manually prior to that time, then at the preset turn-off time, the Zire goes into a loop and drains the battery stone cold dead. Mine behaved this way, and it took a while on the charger before it would respond to a hard reset. That scared me. Once it was revived, it appeared to be drain too fast afterwards, so I did an in-charger reset too, and that helped a lot. I've stayed away from the built-in security feature, and I set the bluetooth & IR to off when I don't need them. My Zire is working like it did when it was new.
