I'm really curious how some of you are using the bluetooth features on the Zire 72. I've found it really limiting. I got a BT dongle for my computer to try wireless hot syncs - but it's so dang slow I've stopped using it. I'm about to buy a BT phone, but am not completely sure how helpful that will be. I get my internet via cable and they don't have a dial up service. So, I'm just a bit unsure of what other possible was the BT can be used. I'd love to hear how people are using this technology.

I am currently using bluetooth to hotsync with my computer and to connect with my phone. I agree, hotsync via bluetooth is slow compared to usb. However, I find it is ok unless installing large apps. If i'm only hotsyncing to back up data, then the speed is fine with me. This is much easier then getting out my cable, plugging it into the computer then into the palm. Bluetooth with my phone works perfectly. I can use it to surf the internet using the gprs connection on my phone. I can check email, sms, mms and dial numbers from my palm.

Ron,

I use BT for syncing to my ThinkPad when away from the desk so I don't have to drag a cable along. I also use it for internet access via a BT access point on my home LAN which has a broadband connection to the rest of the world.

Your current cable ISP doesn't impact your abitlity to dial out via a BT connected cell phone because you'll have to sign up with your cell carrier for internet access through them. Simply calling a dial up (i.e. land line) modem number won't work via cell. If I'm incorrect I'd be interested in hearing; that was my expereience though.

HTH,
Frank

Hi,

I'm on a CDMA network in Canada and use my v710 to dial into my ISP. It is very slow, but I am just charged minutes for doing it this way. I'm stuck in a contract for a year or so, and will probobly switch to a GPRS carrier at the end of my term. (Data speed is brutal using a dialup configuartion.)

If you are with a GPRS network, Frank is right, you'll have to sign up for a data plan.

Just wanted to let you know it was possible.

My main use is connecting to my BT dongle to surf the web while my wife is doing stuff on our PC or if I wanted to look something up while watching our daughter in another room. I did find doing a Hotsync to be too slow usually but it comes in handy now and then. I don't have a BT phone but hope to have one someday.

Just picked up my new motorola V710, so I'm going to be trying out connecting to the internet via the bt phone. I signed up for a small data plan for the trial - I mainly want to be able to check email using the pda. This will be fun playing around with it. If anyone else out there has recommendations, I'd love to hear them. I'm using my Zire 72 and I'm with Alltel for mobile service (CDMA)

I have a UX50 so I use it the surf the web via my V710 (I don't have to carry the cable anymore); to dial numbers through my UX50 address book (saves time instead inputting the numbers in both devices; and I have a Bluetooth head-set so I call people by speaking into the headset wirelessly. The headset feature is convenient, because you can have the phone w/in 40' and still dial a person by name (if you've entered the person in your phone contacts), by number (by saying the digits), or by using your phone commands (such as redial).

Sorry to lead us off topic here, but have you flashed your phone with a new operating system? AFAIK the OBEX was diabled by moto in the v710 so that you can not control the phone with the UX. If this has been figured out, (I know that there have been several flashes for the phone on howards forums and v710.org) I would love to know how to fix it.

again, sorry for taking us off topic.

DaVinci's Palm, you're not off topic. I'm sorry I wasn't specific. I posted that news in a different thread. Verizon has the flash!!!! Get down to your local Verizon tech store right away. Make sure that they reactivate your phone after they put in the flash or when you try to bond, it will say "invalid password," but it’s working great. In fact I've already downloaded two free apps to work with it. One is "Directory Assistant", it looks up numbers through an online phone book, and the other is "Quick Dial" (it allows me to dial the number that the Directory found w/o inputting it. Directory Assistant is for smart phone type devices so it will look up the number and dial it for those, but it will only look it up for the rest of the devices. Quick dial allows you to dial any number that appears by highlighting it or by pasting it from the source.

Well, I mainly use BT for geting email wirlesly when my main PC is powered off and I have no acces to outlook. But, since the bad quality of Palm OS web browsers and email clients(no picture support, etc) I still need to use Outlook to view importtant email.
Sometimes, I also dial using BT and send solutions to a friend in exams. And-rarely I move photos off my SX1 to the Palm for storage!

I misspoke. I have Links Wi-fi connection at home. So I was surfing the web after the new flash w/ my Wi-Fi, but dialing the through the internet w/ Bluetooth. I previously surfed the web, so don't get Verizon's new flash if you want to continue to do it through Bluetooth. So you can dial through your PDA w/ the new flash or you can surf the web and do web browsing w/ the old one. I'm probably going to try superdave's flash on Howard Forum to see if I can change this.

I haven't done the Zire -> BT Adapter -> Internet access through Windows thing; mine goes through an access point on my home LAN. There are some pretty good Web pages with setup information.

I've seen this one referenced: http://www.whizoo.com/bt_setup/ before and have found a bunch that seem reasonable here. (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=palm+bluetooth+internet+access+windows&btnG=Google+Search)
Maybe one of them will help. What symptoms are you seeing?

OK. It's all working. I've changed my settings and kept at it until I connected to the Net again. Thus, with the V710 update you're able to surf the web and dial through your phone. I changed my settings to the VZW instead of qnc.

Hello danopoly,

Paul from palmOne here. Have you installed the Phone Updater on your Zire to enable the Nokia 7210? You can find the description and detailed instructions for this here (http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/phonelink.html).
Also, If you go to this page (http://www.palmone.com/us/support/zire72/), type "bluetooth phone" (no quotes) into the search box and you'll come to another page listing a number of articles that may be of help to you in pairing the two.

Best

Paul
