I have a Palm Zire 72. After my laptop was stolen (along w/ my Zire
72 installation disk) I installed the Palm Zire 72 desktop software
that I downloaded from palm website. After my first synch, my palm
pilot appears to be dead! I cannot get to any of my applications - i
just receive the following message:

FATAL ALERT
MemoryMgr.c,Line:3632,NULL handle

Please help me. My only copy of my contacts and addresses is now in
the Zire 72 and I cannot get to them! I have been using palm pilots
for close to 10 years now and they have been very reliable up until
now. Please help me get my data back!

Oh - I have a terrible feeling that the palm may have actually lost all of my data because the palm desktop applicaiton is empty of data.

I fixed (sort of) the problem myself. I came to the realization that all data had been lost due to Palm's software quality problems (they sure have gone downhill since my first palms in the mid 90s). Palm should be ashamed of this problem and the fact that they wanted to charge me $25 for a support call because I bought this $300 palm pilot 4 months ago. It is inexcusable for a hot synch to cause all data on the machine to be lost. I don't give palm a bright future outlook until they come up with their iPod...

Anyway, I basically did a hard reset to the palm then synched with my old desktop computer that my wife had fortunately synched with a few months ago. All her new data is lost, but at least most of it is back.
