Yesterday President Obama announced that federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland was his pick to replace the late Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court. A lot of people on both sides of the abortion divide struggled to find his position on abortion. "Americans United for Life" the self-described “legal architects of the pro-life movement,” are petitioning the Senate to prevent Garland from becoming a justice. It seems that in 2005, Garland spoke at a book release party and "described the release of the papers of the late Justice Blackmun—the author of one of the Supreme Court’s worst decisions, Roe v. Wade—as a “great gift to the country.”" Even though it is a weak case for obstruction, the group will probably get its wish. The GOP Senate is vowing to block any pick President Obama offers up.
