President Barack Obama nominated Merrick Garland, chief judge of the federal appeals court in Washington and one of the most respected jurists in the country, to the U.S. Supreme Court in a bid to overcome Senate Republicans’ vow to block any appointment. He'd replace late Justice Antonin Scalia on the nation's high court if confirmed.
