THR reports that Joaquin Phoenix has finally closed his deal to star as the Joker in an untitled spin-off movie, reportedly set outside the DCEU; with shooting set to begin this September in New York. Todd Phillips is directing and co-wrote the script, with WB describing it as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

Disney’s shuffling their early 2020s release date calendar, which comes with some lengthy delays. Indiana Jones 5 was previously set for July 10, 2020 but will now open almost a year later on July 9, 2021. Also in 2021, an untitled Marvel movie makes a leap from July 30th all the way up to February 12th. In 2019, Disney will release their hopeful franchise starter Jungle Cruise on October 11th. In 2020, Disney’s long-awaited sequel to Maleficent arrives on May 29th. A little closer on the calendar is this year’s release, Mary Poppins Returns, which moves up from Christmas Day to December 19th.

EW reports that Djimon Hounsou has been revealed to be playing the ancient Wizard who imbues Billy Batson with the power of Shazam. Hounsou’s casting was kept under wraps amid rumors that This Is Us star Ron Cephas Jones would be taking on the role.

THR reports that Ben Affleck will join Anne Hathaway in The Last Thing He Wanted, Dee Rees‘ follow-up film to Mudbound. That film went on to earn four Oscar nominations, including one for Rees herself, becoming the first African American woman to be nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Currently filming in Puerto Rico with an eye on a 2019 release, the Netflix feature also recently added Toby Jones, Rosie Perez and Edi Gathegi to the cast.

Deadline reports that Legendary Entertainment and The Picture Company have secured the rights to first time filmmaker Julian Terry’s horror short They Hear It. Created by Terry as proof of concept, the short will be turned into a feature by Legendary and The Picture Company in which Terry will make his directing debut. The premise: there is a mysterious and terrifying noise called The Sound that attracts children when they hear it. Sources for Deadline compare the story to It and A Nightmare On Elm Street.
